Friday May 31st saw the finals of the Brandtree Super Series held by Cairns Pirates Touch at the Aeroglen fields. Organisers combined the top players from the area, including state and Australian representative players and coaches to compete in a short series to improve skill levels in the lead up to the NQ Championships. The finals proved that they had well and truly succeeded in their goals. There was also a great deal of interest from spectators in the series as well who were not often exposed to such fast paced and high skill level touch football.

The Ladies Open final was fought out between the Ash Moseley Hornets and NQ Discount Glass Stingers. In a see-sawing game the Hornets took the early lead scoring 2 touchdowns and went to half time 2-Nil up. The Hornets again scored after the break and were leading 3-nil before a big comeback by the Stingers scoring 3 unanswered touchdowns. The hornets hit back to make it 4-3. The final five minutes of the game saw it go from one end of the field to the other but Stingers were unable to score again and the final score was 4-3 to Hornets.

The Men’s final was equally as exciting with the G James Glass and aluminium Rattlers and the Premier Catering Stingers. After great defence from both teams holding each other out the Rattlers were first on the scoreboard only to have the Stingers hit back from the next set of 6. Both teams then went touchdown for touchdown and went to the break at 3-all. The Stingers then scored from the tap off and followed it up with the next touchdown to go to a 5-3 lead. However the Rattlers then hit back with 2 consecutive touchdowns to take it back to 5-all. The Stingers then scored to lead 6-5 but the rattler’s hit back to go 6-all. It then became an arm wrestle as both teams were unable to break the deadlock going from one end of the field to the other. The Stingers broke the deadlock and followed it up with a second unanswered touchdown to take it to 8-6. The Rattlers wouldn’t give up and kept going scoring a try after the buzzer to make the final score 8-7 to the Premier Catering Stingers.
